Daniel Schien
Introduction
Dan is a PhD candidate and research assistant at the School of Computer Science at the University of Bristol His responsibilities within his research projects include modelling of energy footprints of complex IT systems and dissemination of research output among academic and industrial partners at conferences, meetings and through publications on the project website or through the project partner, the Guardian. Most prominent, in this space is his modelling work of the organisational carbon footprint of the digital operation of the Guardian.
Outside of his academic work Dan has been co-author in the technical working group of the forthcoming Carbon Trust IT sector guidance on carbon footprinting. Before coming to Bristol, he worked for several years as a software engineer in the IT industry most importantly for subsidiaries of Nokia (gate5 GmbH) and T-Systems (Gemapps GmbH), and Biotronik. At gate5 GmbH he had management responsibility as software test team lead. Drawing from his industry experience, he came to work in the academic field first as a consultant in an international development project in Afghanistan where he developed a curriculum for a computer science bachelor program in a local university.
